Red Bull Play & Destroy, a collegiate student vs. student music battle where all you need is an iPod, creativity and solid song list, came to Cask n’ Flagon this past Thursday evening challenging students’ musical insight and knowledge. Battlegories such as “90’s Rock & Roll” and “Graveyard Tribute (deceased artist)” were picked at random and DJs had 30 seconds to find their three best fitting songs on stage. Berklee College of Music, Northeastern University, and Suffolk University students registered online and stacked their playlists for each battlegory.
In the end, it’s the crowd that decides whether or not you will advance to the next round. DJs who received the most “hype” (cheering) from the audience moved on, while those who didn’t were quickly eliminated. In this battle, connecting with the people in front of you is the difference between instant success or immediate failure.
Ten competitors were finally brought down to two – Dan Biscoe (Mister Bisc) of Northeastern University and Gabriella Cacciatore (DJ Triple D’s) of Suffolk University. After an epic head-to-head battle in the final round, which needed an overtime song to determine the winner, Gabriella received the loudest cheers and took the Red Bull Play & Destroy title.
The competition will continue this month, with MIT going up against Harvard and BU facing BC. Prizes for the top winners include a new iPod Touch, Uber Car Credit, Cask n’ Flagon gift cards, and iTunes gift cards. On November 10th, the top four DJs from each qualifier will compete in the Red Bull Play & Destroy Boston Finals at Paradise Rock Club!
