The Groove’s Ultimate Summer Jam Playlist Staff Picks:

Song: “If I Lose Myself”
Artist: OneRepublic
We Love It Because… “During the month of March (Native’s release), this song held the most plays in my iTunes, breaking over 100. Now that it’s summer in the city, those play counts have more than tripled. Though this song is widely accessible and easily radio-friendly, it has so much to offer from a lyric standpoint, as well as from an innovative musical perspective. With a driving breakdown chorus urging listeners to ‘keep trying’ and ‘keep flying,’ this song epitomizes my new-found optimistic motto in life.” – Caleb Hsu (Staff Writer)

Song: “Horchata”
Artist: Vampire Weekend
We Love It Because… “We’re loving the latest album from Vampire Weekend, but ‘Horchata’ off of 2010’s Contra will forever have a place in our hearts as one of our favorite summer jams. If you’re like us and don’t have the luxury of living by a beach, putting this song on will immediately transport you to warm sand and a perfect ocean breeze.” – Lisa Occhino (Editor-in-Chief)

Song: “Royals”
Artist: Lorde
We Love It Because… “This song is so addictingly catchy that you can’t help but want to be just like her. With clever lyrics that flow effortlessly and beats that make you want to dance within the first few seconds of the song, this is perfect for getting ready for a night out or staying in and hanging with your friends. Keep an eye on this girl – she’s going to be huge!” – Alyssa McCord (Promotional Director)

Song: “Sweater Weather”
Artist: The Neighbourhood
We Love It Because… “Being originally from the La-La Land of Sunshine (i.e. LA for you non-West Coasters), this song transports me right back to my buoyant pre-college stress days. It has a hollowness that’s airy yet refrained, enough to capture the joy of an idealistic summer without being cliché. Perfect for early morning drives down coastal sceneries in ’80s-inspired convertibles with classic vintage aviators, ‘Sweater Weather’ is your all-American rustic glory anthem for summertime.” – Caleb Hsu (Staff Writer)

Song: “Brave”
Artist: Sara Bareilles
We Love It Because… “Co-written by fun.’s Jack Antonoff, ‘Brave’ was inspired by Sara’s close friend who was struggling with coming out. While widely embraced by the LGBT community, the song’s universal theme has sprung it to summer anthem status for anyone in need of a little motivation. There’s no doubt about it – Sara just wants to see you be brave this summer!” – Lisa Occhino (Editor-in-Chief) (Check out our review of The Blessed Unrest and our interview with Sara!)

Song: “Religion”
Artist: Skylar Grey
We Love It Because… “Coming off of Skylar Grey’s brand new album Don’t Look Down, I have been totally obsessed with this song since we featured her for our Staff Pick of July. Whether you’re riding around with the windows down or taking a run along the river, this is a perfect song to sing along to with your best friends. With lyrics like, ‘When you don’t know what to believe in, let me be your religion,’ it has that perfect radio-friendly summer vibe that will fill you with hope and sunshine even on the rainiest summer day in the city.” – Alyssa McCord (Promotional Director)
