Brooklyn-based alt-rock band X Ambassadors released their debut major label EP Love Songs Drug Songs back in 2013. The EP included the track “Stranger,” which was co-written by Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons. In promotion of the EP, X Ambassadors toured alongside Imagine Dragons, The Mowglis, and Jimmy Eat World. In 2014, the band released a second major label EP, The Reason. In promotion of the new EP, X Ambassadors will support Panic! at the Disco and Imagine Dragons on their respective tours.
X Ambassadors stopped by Northeastern University earlier in April to play a few stripped-down songs and answer some questions from fans in the Twitter-verse. A pair of tickets to their sold-out show at Great Scott was placed in a raffle, alongside a copy of their latest EP. I happened to win a copy of the EP and it’s awesome (I’m actually listening to it right now.) However, I am resolved to give an honest, unbiased account of the afternoon, despite the awesome gift I ended up receiving.
The event began with a live performance of “Unconsolable.” The crowd response was immediate and attentive. These guys were as good as the record from to start to finish. “Love Songs, Drug Songs” and “Liotist” came and went in similar fashion; dead silence in the beginning, and riotous applause in the end.
After their short teaser of a set, X Ambassadors’ frontman Sam Harris set some time aside to respond to a few hilarious fan tweets. His answers were candid and unrehearsed, and it was nice to get a glimpse of what was behind the mask, seeing who these guys are offstage. Sam gave quite a bit of insight into his past, revealing his humble beginnings, musical upbringing, and musical theatre aspirations, as well as his recent collaborations with Eminem, Imagine Dragons, and mega-producer Alex Da Kid.
The event ended with a short meet and greet with the guys at their merchandise table, and the initial positive impression I had of X Ambassadors was finally confirmed. The guys could not have been any nicer. Overall, it was a great event, and not a single person left the room without a smile on their face. If you weren’t there, you definitely missed out, but be sure to check out their official site!
