Artist You Should Know: Denitia

by Ayanna Jacobs-El

Denitia Odigie, who goes by Denitia, is a soulful Queens-based singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. I was first exposed to Denitia through Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist. The song I heard in the playlist was the moody “Divided,” which she released as a part of the electro-pop denitia and sene. In summer 2017, Denitia emerged as a solo artist with her Ceilings EP. On this project, Denitia showcased her eclectic songwriting style and explored a new individual sound. It seemed as though she was ready to let go of her protective barriers and fully express herself and innermost feelings to listeners.

This month, Denitia released a new single called “Reach Me.” The song was created for the film “Snowy Bing Bongs Across The North Star Combat Zone” (go to the 22-minute mark to see “Reach Me” in the film). The film, created by directors Rachel Wolther and Alex Fischer, showcases the Cocoon Central Dance Team in a series of vignettes filled with comedy and unusually, choreographed dance routines. According to Denitia,“I was inspired by the wintry landscape of the film and the feeling of being lost in the cold, and by my real-life experience of feeling understood by someone close to me in times of darkness, but not wanting to ask for help or be vulnerable.”

“Reach Me” evokes a floating, dreamy vibe from the shimmering synths to the ethereal vocal backgrounds in the chorus. Throughout the song, Denitia’s voice emits a raw and earnest quality that really grabs the listener’s attention. Her pleading of “If anyone can reach me” really tugs at the heartstrings while also being extremely catchy. It’s quite amazing that the song was written after the scene was already filmed and was synched up to match the choreographed dance moves exactly. After listening to the song and viewing the scene together, everything looks so organic that I would have assumed the filming took place after the song was created.

For the first half of 2018, Denitia will be releasing one single a month. On February 9th, Denitia will release a second single called “Never Told You.” The coming song is a striking contrast from “Reach Me” with a darker and more brooding tone. It features evolving synths that ebb and flow like waves on a beach and perfectly suit Denitia’s rich, plaintive vocals. This track fits more into the Alternative R&B genre while still exploring unique textures that give it a distinctive feel.

Denitia seems to be thoroughly exploring her artistry since starting her career as a solo artist. She isn’t afraid to push boundaries and let her true emotions shine through. The multi-faceted artist is extremely versatile when it comes to songwriting and producing in a wide array of styles. I can also attest to her great performance abilities, which she showcased as an opener for Taylor McFerrin at the Red Room last year. I’m excited to hear what the talented artist releases next!
