I can’t even lie: I have senioritis and I’m just ending my junior year. The semester has been draining with the classes, gigs, work, and practice, but there’s still this week of finals to conquer. If you’re like me, even though it’s also my vocation, music is what I turn to for solace in high stress situations, so I thought I’d find some music that you could plug in to Spotify (or whatever service you use) to get through what could be a grueling week. Check it out below:
Janelle Monae – Dirty Computer (specifically Django Jane)
Janelle Monae just dropped a new album, and it’s fire. I love all of the songs, the narrative she’s painting (made even more amazing by what she calls an “emotion” picture. It’s a visual album and it’s truly remarkable). Whether an instructor is getting on your nerves or you’re going through personal issues while trying to take exams, there’s a song on this album for you.
J. Cole – KOD
J. Cole also dropped a new album recently, which I enjoy as well. While he’s addressing some pretty heavy topics, he does so over sometimes upbeat production, so if you’re looking for some “turn up” tunes without the poisonous messaging that seems to pervade hip-hop (and music in general) these days, check out this album.
Dear White People Season 2 Soundtrack
I must say that while binge watching season 2 of this series on Netflix this past weekend, I was definitely struck by the music deeply. One of my favorite music supervisors, Morgan Rhodes, worked on five episodes in season 1, and I suspect she may have had a hand in curating some of this phenomenal music for the second season. In any event, you can binge listen to the soundtrack on this Spotify playlist.
Elle Varner – F*** It All
Obviously, this is for when you’ve made it to Wednesday or Thursday, but you don’t know if you can make it through one more day of exams, projects, packing (if you’re leaving for summer or moving out of the dorms). It’s for when you accidentally delete that 10-page essay or can’t cram another morsel of Caf food down your throat. And it’s ABSOLUTELY for if/when it hits you that you may not see your closest friends for a few months because summer will separate you and you start having a meltdown. Go ahead and have your meltdown, listen to this song, and then get back to work.
Jaden Smith – ICON
And this one is for when you hit Friday night, having slayed every finals week dragon, and it’s time to celebrate all of your grandeur and awesomeness. Yes, you’re awesome. If you made it through finals week, scathed or unscathed, YOU ARE! And if you’re graduating this coming weekend, you have even more to celebrate because you’ve conquered the biggest dragon of your undergraduate career… ACTUALLY GRADUATING!
