If you’re an Insta-goer, recently you’ve probably been tagged in someone’s story or post about “Artists Supporting Artists,” and if you’re anything like me, you were thoroughly confused.

Artists Supporting Artists is a new Instagram trend that went viral seemingly overnight in response to this pandemic causing a huge loss of work for artists everywhere. Here’s how it works: one person posts a blank Instagram story tagging 5-10 of the artists in their life with the hashtag, sticker, or phrase “Artists Supporting Artists.” Then those 10 people repost the story, and each tag 10 more people, and so on, until the exposure to new and different artists has absolutely exploded. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it was inspired by the very thing causing so much anxiety and strife around the world right now.

Rather than spreading disease and suffering, the artists of Instagram have decided to spread awareness of the difficulties they face due to the expendability of their careers. Performers are stuck at home, visual artists are struggling to get their work out there, and many are taking a large financial hit because selling their work is nearly impossible when every potential customer has lost their jobs and can’t afford frivolity.

This trend is not only bringing awareness to the issue but the artists it impacts, and what’s better than giving support to all the fantastic artists in your life, especially while everyone is stuck at home?
