Debuting at Mysteryland festival this summer, classically trained pianist of Brazilian, German and Croatian descent, SKIY is a young rising star in the global electronic music scene. As part of Oliver Helden’s label, Heldeep, she is climbing up the ladder at an exciting pace. Passion, hard work and a deep appreciation for an eclectic pallet of music, she’s one to keep an eye on.
What was your inspiration for your song 'Use Me'?
I love to work while I’m traveling, and I always bring my laptop to use my time as efficiently as possible. I’d had this idea in mind ever since I travelled to Gothenburg-Summerburst festival in Sweden. The track came together pretty quickly.
What inspired you to move away from the more commercial house sound?
I have so much music in my mind and so many ideas that it would be a pity to just focus on one special kind of music. If the track ends up being more commercial then that’s fine by me, as long as the crowd loves the track as much as I do.
In your opinion, what are the key elements that make a good beat?
The most important thing for me when I’m releasing music is that people love the track, feel the power and want to dance with me to these beats.
What do you love most about what you do?
I'm so thankful to be in this crazy scene. That's definitely a highlight on its own. To be able to release my own music, to play at prestigious festivals and being supported by great artists like Oliver Heldens and many others.
Do you have a process when it comes to producing tracks?
It’s not always the same procedure. Sometimes you have a specific idea that needs to come to life, or you experiment with countless sounds and elements until something really cool builds up. I don’t have a specific ritual in the studio. It’s where all my experiences and creativity come together and it’s always a new process.
What are your top three tips for DJing?
Follow your heart and trust in your own inspiration. Besides the linear and generic steps in producing music it's always important to listen to the melodies deep inside of you. Follow the signs your mind shows you and you'll find the right way.
How has being part of Heldeep help you grow?
It definitely shows me that I’m on the right path with what I am doing at the moment. It is an incredible honor to receive support from such an inspiring and successful artist. Thanks to Oliver Heldens, I had a great show in Hamburg at Docks. It was amazing to open his show.
What advice would you give to your 14-year-old self?
Think positively and follow your goals. Follow your dreams and trust that everything will be ok, even if sometimes it doesn't feel that way, especially in the beginning.
Where do you see yourself in five years-time?
I don’t have any expectations. I just jump into it and let things happen. My goal is to remain a part of this industry for years to come. There’s a lot of work ahead of me which I’m ready for! I will keep working hard to stay a part of the global electronic music scene, as both a DJ and producer. A lot of tracks are in the making and ready for release. I hope you will follow my journey!
Who do you aspire to work with?
I admire ARTBAT. They’re incredible and create atmospheric Tech House and Melodic House music. I also have a big Solomun appreciation! Of course that's only two names of artists that inspire me, but it would be an absolute honor to work with them. I love the stylistic crossover between techy beats, refined catchy house riffs and rugged basslines, so I’m heavily inspired by artists like Fisher, Chris Lake or Solardo. A collaboration with them would be amazing.
How do you #getinthegroove?
I am a very positive person. I love music and I love what I do every single day. So there is no need for me to get in the groove. I’m always in the groove! It is my passion that gets me in groove to perform and create new music.
