Breaking Down the Savior Complex with Jen Aldana

Though her life is looking a little different than what she planned, Jen’s faith spurs her on to create bold, authentic anthems of worship.

Girl with Micro Braids

FEBRUARY 20, 2020

If I had one word to describe this new release, it would be fierce. Everglow’s latest comeback comes to us in a four-song EP or’ Mini Album’ as they are known in K-Pop. Teasers began leaking towards the beginning of the year, and on February 3, 2020, Reminiscence dropped along with a music video for the second track “DUN DUN”.

The music video for “DUN DUN” is fairly standard for Everglow and quite similar to “Adios”, but this time they’ve adopted a theme of ice and frost to match their silver accessories and cool toned makeup looks. The choreography for “DUN DUN” (as it’s the only one we’ve seen so far) is quite unusual for a girl group, as it is focused on moves that illicit strength and intensity rather than soft elegance. That is something that has always made Everglow stand out from the crowd. Their choreography and music feels more masculine and strong than any girl group I’ve seen, and it’s refreshing to see the envelope being pushed so far, especially by such young performers.

The EP itself is diverse in its sounds, yet still a cohesive unit, making it a fun and interesting listen. Everglow’s electronic influence and hard-drop choruses are what have come to define them as a group, and while Reminiscence continues these themes, they use them in a fresh and exciting way. “DUN DUN” and “PLAYER” retain that classic Everglow sound, while “NO LIE” and “SALUTE” are fun and upbeat tracks that fall closer in line with traditional girl groups.

Something I’m hoping for in the next comeback, is more of Aisha. She doesn’t often get much screen time in music videos, and is withheld lines in favour of members Mia or E:U. Aisha is my favorite member of Everglow for her charisma and her stage presence, so I’d love to see her featured more in the next comeback. Overall, this release was a smashing success in every sense of the word. Everglow is certainly one of the most promising rookie groups in K-Pop and I can’t wait to see what they do in the future.
