Repost from Kate Heffernan, @krhyoga, lead teacher at Down Under School of Yoga.
I had trouble sleeping the other night and at three in the morning this poured out of me into the notes app on my phone. Some of you may remember a few years ago when I wrote a piece on “tying the knot” with @downunderyoga. It was a love letter to the studio I call home because after years of teaching yoga full time, I finally had a studio stand up and offer me benefits that go along with that commitment. I wrote it because I believe in transparency, because I believe when we as consumers know how the people we see at our local institutions are supported, it can make us even more empowered to support businesses that do the right thing.
I’m writing today to renew my vows to my home studio and to make a call of action to support and take class at your local live-streaming studio. By doing so you are supporting me, our teachers, my colleagues, our managers and our shuttered physical studio spaces. You are also supporting the fact that even in this time of crisis, my benefits of healthcare are still intact. You are supporting the fact that our studio has decided to offer two free weeks to all hospital staff, because it’s the right thing to do. When you live-stream locally, you are supporting all of those things. Even if you have to pop off 15 minutes before class ends. Even if you want to do you own thing.
Your showing up has always mattered. But now as so many of us who rely on people showing up for a living, it is even more important to vote with your dollars. Vote with your “feet”! A live-stream class may seem like any other, but for so many of us in the yoga and wellness industry, your showing up is a literal lifeline. So even though everyone and their mother are offering free classes online, I ask you to support your local studio. If cost is an issue, reach out to the management team. The only way out is through... and the only way through this is if we support one another. If we support what we find valuable, we will continue standing through this and will come out the other side together.
Sending you all so much love.
